Henry Anderson Stewart was a fisherman, engineer, sailor, Shetland Islands Councillor and altogether well-known figure in Whalsay. Anthony P. Cohen's book, Whalsay: Symbol, Segment and Boundary in a Shetland Island Community, has a section specifically on Henry (pp. 153-9), as well as numerous other references to him throughout it. The front cover of the book features Whalsay's fishermen, with Henry at the front.
Biography
Henry had 8 other siblings, and was the youngest among them. He was educated at the Anderson Educational Institute, initially living and working outwith Shetland. He had a variety of different jobs after leaving school, including working for the Post Office as an engineer in Orkney, as a signal engineer in Africa during World War 2, and he was also involved in the construction of water services in Unst.
Politically, he was against the UK joining the European Union (European Economic Community at the time) as he foresaw the troubles which this would bring to small island communities like Shetland, and Whalsay.
He had six daughters. One of them, Loretta, was also a councillor for Whalsay.
