Reverend Alexander William Groundwater was a minister and a County Councillor for Walls from 1919 until his resignation in October 1921. He unsuccessfully contested the Walls seat at the 1913 County Council election.
Biography
Alexander began life as a blacksmith. After moving to Manchester, he took up mission work and became a minister of the Congressional church there. After resigning his Manchester appointment due to ill health, he was appointed to Harray in Orkney, where he served 4 1/2 years. In 1909, he came to Shetland to take up the post in Walls which he held until 1921 when he was transferred to Couper Angus and Blairgowrie. While there, he served on their Town Council for 16 years.
He was a member of the Labour Party and contested the Banff seat for them in 1924, placing third behind the Unionist and Liberal Party candidates.
