James John Nicolson was a County Councillor for Gulberwick between 1951 and 1955.
Biography
Born near Clickimin, James's family moved to a Brindister croft when he was young. At the age of 14, he became a crane boy aboard the St Rognvald and moved from there into deep water sailing.
In 1918 James worked with North of Scotland Company and was aboard the St Magnus when she was torpedoed off Peterhead. His final ship was the St Sunniva, in 1919. He then returned to Shetland where he began a milk round in Lerwick and began expanding his farm holdings, including buying land in Gulberwick. Around 1955 he retired and passed the farm down to his family.
He had a hand in much of the agriculture industry in Shetland, he was President of the Cunningsburgh Agricultural Society, an office-bearer for the Shetland Sheepdog Trials, a former Chair of the National Farmers Union in Shetland and Chair of the Shetland Marts. He was also a founding member of Shetland Lime Ltd.
