James John Paton was a Lerwick Town Councillor between 1960 and 1975 and a Shetland Islands Councillor for Lerwick Twageos between 1978 and 1982. He was the grandfather of former Shetland Islands Councillor for the same area, James. He unsuccessfully contested the 1945, 1947, 1958 and 1968 Lerwick Town Council elections. as well as the Lerwick Twageos seat at the 1978 Shetland Islands Council election.
