Biography
Alexander had his first job while he was still at school - selling copies of a daily newsheet of war news during WWI. He then became a message boy at D & G Kay's. Upon leaving education, he worked for the firm full time, eventually being tasked with running the company's Mid Yell & Burravoe branches, as well as Ollaberry for a time. In the 1930's, he went into partnership with D & G Kay's Theo Kay. Alexander entered the knitwear industry, targeting rich buyers from England.
He was invalidated out of the war, and subsequently bought out Theo Kay, with Kays of Shetland becoming Tullochs of Shetland. Alexander developed branches in Mid Yell and Burravoe. The family moved from Yell to Reawick in 1950. In the mid-50s, Alexander bought Queen's Hotel in Lerwick
He is said to have begun every morning with a swim in the sea, even in his later years.
