Captain Hercules James Arthurson was County Councillor for Sandsting from 1932 until his death in 1937.

Biography

He attended Skeld Public School, leaving at the age of 13 to work on the beach, washing and drying fish for Messrs Garriock & Co. After one season there, he returned to school aged 14 but he was hired as a crane-boy for the North of Scotland Steam Navigation Company's steamer Queen. Across 3 years he served on that vessel and the St Magnus and St. Clair. Afterwards, he had a short service on the Design, before sailing out of Glasgow to work in the Black Sea and Mediterranean. His career at sea took him to such places as New Caledonia, Australia, USA and South Africa.

By 1914, he was the Master of the steamer Moidart, and in 1915 moved to Edinburgh. He skippered the ships North Holland and Patmos during WWI under the Ministry of Shipping. In about 1925, he returned to Westerskeld.
