Sir Arthur John Frederick William Nicolson was born 11th Baronet of that Ilk and Lasswade, 1629, of Brough Lodge, Fetlar, Shetland.

Biography

He was born in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia to Arthur of Adelaide, SA, Australia, 10th. Baronet and Annie Rutherford, Buninyong, Victoria, Australia, (died 1936), daughter of the late John Rutherford, Bruntsfield Place, Edinburgh; born 8 June 1882. He succeeded his father in 1917. He was educated at Merchiston Castle School in Edinburgh and studied law at Edinburgh University (M.A. LL.B.). He received the O.B.E. in December 1944. He served as Lord Lieutenant for Shetland 1948-52, and as a Justice of the Peace. He was a Lieutenant in the R.N.V.R. during World War 1 and served in World War 2 as Lt. Col. commanding the 1st Zetland Battalion Home Guard. The family roots can be traced back to James Nicolson (1530-1580), writer and burgess of Edinburgh, clerk to the Collector of Thirds.

Nicolson was also a County Councillor for Fetlar between 1917 and 1932.
