Captain Laurence Laurenson was a captain in the Gordon Highlanders, a woollen draper, hosier and Lerwick Town Councillor, first from February until November in 1905, then again from 1913 until his death in July 1916.

Biography

In 1864-5, when Laurence was still a boy, the his family moved to America. Unfortunately, his father Peter and brother Scott both died within the first two years, so his mother Bruce returned to Lerwick.

After completing his education in Lerwick, Laurence joined Laurenson & Co, at the time the oldest hosiery merchants in Shetland. An able worker, Laurence became a partner in the business relatively early and helped grow the business.

In the early 1870s, he joined the 1st Zetland Rifles, and was a member of that Corps until it disbanded in 1883. On the formation of the 7th Volunteer Battalion Gordon Highlanders in 1900, he joined and was appointed first a provisional sergeant, before coming a qualified sergeart and later a colour-sergeant of his company. He was called up to fight in WWI, but stayed in Shetland, where he became a Recruiting Officer for the isles.

He unsuccessfully contested the 1905 Lerwick Town Council election.
