Captain Angus Gunn was a merchant seaman and County Councillor, representing Cunningsburgh from 1938 until his death in 1940.
Biography
Angus's family moved to Shetland when his father took over a sheep farm. While still a boy, the family then relocated to Cunningsburgh to take over the farm of the late John Bruce. He attended the Cunningsburgh Parish School and after completing his studies held the role of acting pupil teacher there.
At the age of 16, he entered the counting house of Joseph Leask & Sons, shipowners, fishcurers etc in Lerwick where he apprenticed as an accountant and clerk. However, like for many young men in Shetland, the call of the sea was strong and he eventually moved south to pursue a career on the water. He worked for some years in Nova Scotia and when he returned to the UK, he set up his base in South Shields and later Hull, where he pursued a Master's Certificate. For 47 years, he worked at sea, only retiring in 1937. He worked with three companies: Stag Line of North Shields, Messrs Williams & Co in Cardiff and latterly with the Pool Steam Shipping Co managed by Messrs Ropner & Co, West Hartlepool.
He was appointed as secretary of the Lerwick Lifeboat Committee in 1937.
