Biography
He was described by the Shetland Times as one of the "foremost business men and one of the most eminent figures ever to take part in the Island's public life". Upon his marriage to Jane Smith, he moved from Tingwall to Sandsound and operated a general merchant shop in Weisdale. By the 1910s, the family had relocated to Lerwick where Henry was associated with the Shetland Island's Steam Trading Company.
In 1907, he began his association with the form J & J Tod & Sons. In the preceding century, the firm was one of the principle suppliers to the grocery trade in Shetland, and Henry was hired to run the Shetland operation of the firm, overseeing a significant expansion of the organisation's operations. Under his stewardship, the firm opened their first depot in Lerwick and extended the operation into Orkney.
His great-great-great uncle James Mouat was a Lerwick Town Councillor. Henry was also a distant relative of Robert Stewart, the first Earl of Orkney (9th Great-grandson).
