William Robert Thomas 'Bob' Hamilton was a County Councillor for Nesting between 1955 and 1973. His father, Zachary was a County Councillor for Yell North from 1890 until his death in 1905, just 21 days after William's birth. He unsuccessfully contested the Nesting at the 1973 County Council election.
Biography
William spent a large part of his youth out of Shetland, at the Edinburgh Academy, at a boarding school in England and at the University of Edinburgh.
In 1929, he sailed to New Zealand where he farmed sheep during the depression. In WWII, he volunteered for the New Zealand Army and saw action in the North African Campaign. He was captured in 1942 and became a prisoner of war in Germany. Despite several escape attempts, he saw out the rest of the war in captivity. After the war, he settled in Shetland and became a partner in the Adie business in Voe (his mother was the daughter of William Adie).
