James Andrew 'Ooie Jeemie' Smith was a shopkeeper and Lerwick Town Councillor from 1934 to 1941, as provost from 1936 until his resignation in 1941. His brother in law John Leslie was also a Councillor and his daughter, Patricia, was married to Major Bill Anderson
Biography
He first had a wool and hosiery business in his native island of Yell, and moved after World War I to set up in Lerwick. He was a founder and President of the Shetland Woollen Industry Association, whose principal aim was the protection of Shetland's hand-knitted industry by means of a trademark.
