John Leisk was a Lerwick Town Councillor.
Biography
John arrived in Lerwick in 1861 aged 16, starting his working career with George Reid Tait at 171 Commercial Street. In September 1871, with Alexander Sandison, he purchased Tait's business and began trading under the name Messrs Leisk and Sandison, continuing until Alexander's death in 1918. He then entered into partnership with John Harrison until 1928 when Leisk retired, while Harrison continued to operate the business as Leisk and Sandisons.
He was a member of the Lerwick Harbour Trust for 43 years, and was one of the guarantors for the new Victoria Pier, and later served as the Chairman of the body. As a member of the Town Council, he and Alfred Stove were involved in planning of the New Town. He was additionally a member of a number of other bodies, including the Lerwick Gaslight Company, Feuars and Heritors and a Director of the Shetland Fishermen's Widows' Relief Fund.
As a young man, he was also interested in photography.
