William Sievwright was a Lerwick Town Councillor and was the son of procurator fiscal, town councillor, and writer William. Sievwright Jr was a lawyer at the legal firm Sievwright and Stout. His first marriage was to Margaret Neven-Spence, to whom he had two children. He later remarried (1878) and had two children to Margaret Home Richardson , a teacher and nurse. She is also listed as being a feminist, political activist, community leader. She met William in New Zealand and they married on 29 November 1878 in Wellington.
