Major Thomas Mouat Cameron was a Lerwick Town Councillor from 1876 until he chose to retire in September 1883. He served as Chief Magistrates of the Lerwick Town Council from 1876 until his resignation in 1883. His grandson, Norman, was a Zetland County Councillor for Bressay.

Biography

Thomas was educated at a Military Academy in Edinburgh, before joining the East India Company in 1838. He served for 12 years, returning to Shetland in 1850 until 1852, before heading back out to India, where he stayed until his retiral in 1861. By 1871, he owned the Annesbrae Estate and later the Garth.

He was a member of the Commissioners of Supply, the Convener of the Zetland Road Board, as well as many other positions in Shetland:—Deputy-Lieutenant, Honorary Sheriff-Substitute, Vice-President i of the Orkney and Zetland Association, President of the Shetland Literary and Scientific Society, Chairman of Directors ' of the Lerwick Town Hall Company, and of the Shetland Fishermen’s Widows’ Relief' Fund, and Chairman of the Lerwick Harbour Trust. He was also a Trustee of the Feuars and Heritors and Convener of the Heritors’ Committee for Parochial Buildings.
