George Husband Baird Hay was a deputy lieutenant, convener of the county, benefactor to the Earl of Shetland and a Lerwick Town Councillor between 1856 and 1862 and later from 1879 to 1882. Both his father William and brother Arthur were Councillors.

Biography

He became the Head of Hay and Co in 1858 at age 30, following the death of his father, William. He was chairman of the Parochial Board for many years, and chairman of the School Board during the first two terms of its existence; chairman of the Shetland Islands Steam Company; and of the Gas-Light Company. He was also chairman of the Road Trustees and consequently exofficio member of the County Council, was a Justice of the Peace, latterly of Deputy Lieutenant for the County, and Vice-Consul for France.
