Balfour Spence was a Shipping Agent, Merchant and Lerwick Town Councillor.
Biography
Bayanne genealogy page notes that Spence was involved in the trading of illegal goods on top of his legal activities and indicates that he was a 4th Great-Grandfather of Shetland Archivist, Brian Smith.
In 1817, Balfour was made Vice Consul for the kingdom of Hanover in Shetland.
He was married to Charlotte Ogilvy, daughter of Charles and brother of Charles, both councillors. His great-great grandson Charles Spence was a Zetland County Councillor and his third cousin once-removed William Spence was also a councillor.
